Discover the Beautiful Meaning of Reiki Mass – and How It Found Its Name

A personal reflection on how a morning run meditation birthed a new term for collective healing

The Journey Inward First

Reiki begins as an individual practice, reconnecting with our inner self and re-learning to love and accept ourselves with compassion. Through this practice, we begin to break down unhelpful habits that can lead to self-sabotage, low self-esteem, and cause us to pay attention to our conditions more than our own values.

We come to understand how our values can and do change the more we experience, and this is called growth.

All too often we are held responsible for an attitude or opinion we held in the past. With the unfolding of our vices and renewal of our self-acceptance, we can let go of unhelpful thoughts and sit in the uncomfortable spaces and decide if we choose to stay there or move on.

When these expectations are released from ourselves, we begin to heal and grow and see joy in the world around us and within us.

Opening to Others

Once this happens and we can open our hearts and arms to our closest friends and family again, we grow further into the essence of Reiki—confidence in our wisdom to be seen, heard, and listened to without judgment. And even if there is judgment, we can accept their opinion as their own, without taking offense and declaring them to be “out of my circle and out of my life.”

Oops, have I slipped into my own experience here? Hehehaha!

Back to generalizing…

Expanding to Community

Once we feel supported by Reiki through our family life, we naturally turn our attention to our wider circles and begin to feel the vast benefits of community connection and growth. There is so much knowledge in the community, we can all share and benefit from it.

Yet, our own interpretations and experience shape this knowledge into our unique experience, ensuring that the wisdom that now sits with us is our own to share, without competition or plagiarism.

And when we all share in the wisdom, with acceptance, understanding, and compassion, we become one. One group of joy, one group of wisdom, one group of energy.

Finding the Name

When I reached this point in my journey, I didn’t have a name for it. Now I realise that this is possible regardless of the point from where we start.

We may experience Reiki Mass as an event to attend, where each month we visit a set topic. But beneath the layers, it is a wisdom-sharing gathering—the wisdom we cannot put into words. A wisdom that I facilitate, that you share and translate through your thoughts, dreams, and daily practices.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom with the group, and I look forward to more!

From the Ethereal to the Practical

Now I invite you to return from the ethereal back to the practical. The wisdom above could only be put into words thanks to Reiki Masses already occurred. I didn’t know at the time what I wanted to experience and share. Yet here we are, spouting all sorts of great stuff!

Coming up with a suitable and deserved name was difficult to begin with. “Group Reiki” was obvious due to the nature of the gathering—we would in fact be a group of people – but as I started advertising, it sounded too plain. Not enough oomph.

I had nothing better and didn’t really want to reinvent the wheel, so I rolled with it.

The Morning Run Revelation

When running one morning, I decided to meditate on the name (running is where my best meditations occur), and a simple sentence came to the forefront of my mind:

“I want Reiki to appeal to the masses.”

Ping! There it was, in its raging simplicity.

I want a group of people, the bigger the better, to come and experience Reiki. I want our energies to merge into a single body of oneness.

And Reiki Mass was born.

Movement became meditation — and a new name was born: Reiki Mass.

The Mission Behind the Name

Not only did I want people to shift into coherence, I wanted to offer the opportunity for people to experience Reiki without:

  • The financial pressure
  • The expectation of insights
  • The uncertainty of which modality leads the Reiki session

I wanted to bring Reiki back to the simple practice it is.

Why “Mass” Fits Perfectly

Now, the common association with “Mass” leads to thoughts of Catholicism. When I Googled “mass” and read the definitions, the name was solidified and what I hope to be a new term penned for the future, Reiki Mass was formed.

Here are all the definitions I found, and only one didn’t fit the bill. Can you guess which one?
